As the sun sets across the UAE, the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi come alive; not just with lights, but with global recognition.

A recent study by UK-based travel agency Travelbag has ranked Dubai as the third most scenic city in the world at night, while Abu Dhabi secured a strong 12th place.

But beyond the dazzling views, both cities have also been celebrated for what truly matters to residents and travelers alike: safety.

In fact, Abu Dhabi was named the safest city in the world to explore after dark, with Dubai following closely among the top three.

This blend of beauty and security is helping both emirates lead the global rise of “noctourism”; a new travel trend that emphasises experiences under the stars.

With 190 late-night venues in Dubai and 62 in Abu Dhabi, the cities offer plenty of nighttime entertainment; from rooftop lounges and glowing skyline views to serene desert escapes.

Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa, for example, frequently lights up with special projections, such as the Saudi national flag recently displayed to celebrate the Kingdom’s National Day.

Both cities earned respectable marks for light and noise pollution, with Abu Dhabi scoring slightly lower, reflecting its calmer nighttime environment.

The trend toward nighttime travel is growing. According to Booking.com, travelers in 2025 are increasingly seeking after-dark adventures, from stargazing tours to night safaris.

Dubai in particular has seen a 22 per cent surge in searches for night desert safaris; an exciting way to beat the daytime heat and see the desert in a new light.

The city has also introduced night swimming at three public beaches, allowing residents and tourists to cool off safely after sunset.

With their combination of security, natural and urban beauty, and a growing portfolio of unique night experiences, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are quickly becoming the world’s favourite destinations after dark; perfect for those who want to explore, relax, or celebrate under the city lights.
