UAE approves booster shot of Pfizer-BioNtech for all adults

Government urges public not to delay in receiving third dose.

Adults in the UAE who received their double dose of Pfizer-BioNtech or Sputnik V more than six months ago, are being offered a third booster shot.

The news comes after the emergence of a new strain of the coronavirus in Southern African and Europe.

At a televised briefing today (28 November), the authorities encouraged residents to register for a third shot.

Until now, only members of the public who were double vaccinated with the aforementioned vaccines and had health conditions, were over the age 50 or vaccinated with the Sinopharm jab, could receive a third dose.

Dr Farida Al Hosani, government health spokesperson, advised members of the public to make sure their they received their booster does as soon as possible.

The Omicron strain which was first reported in South Africa is said to more contagious than other variants of Covid-19.

In response to the new discovery, a number of countries have tightened entry protocols with Israel banning any foreigners entering the country and the UK making  it mandatory to undergo a PCR test within the first two days of arrival alongside self-isolation until a negative PCR test result is produced.

The UAE has banned travellers from seven Southern African countries from entering the country in the past week.

At the time of writing, 100 per cent of the UAE’s population had received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine with more than 90 per cent being fully vaccinated.
