This is huge news
Abu Dhabi will be welcoming a new tram network that will take people around Yas Island and all the way to Zayed International Airport, it’s been announced.
The big reveal came courtesy of the Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADT) on the opening day of the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition and Conference.
The project, officially called the Abu Dhabi Light Rail Project (LRT), has already been given the green light by the Department of Municipalities and Transport.
It will roll out in three phases, starting with the base phase. You’ll be able to hop on at Yas Gateway Park, stopping at Ferrari World, Yas Marina Circuit and Yas Bay.

It will also go to Zayed International Airport, Etihad Plaza and Al Raha Mall. And while this is getting a bit ahead of ourselves, a connection to the much-anticipated Disneyland Abu Dhabi was also teased at the conference.
Cheryl Chan, strategic adviser at Abu Dhabi Airports, put it best: “We wanted to link up the airport with the rest of Abu Dhabi. Right now, in terms of public transportation, there are only a few bus lines that come from downtown.”
ADT also unveiled plans for the Urbanloop, an autonomous, pod-like French transit system that made its debut at the Paris Olympics.
Reem Island will be the first to get a ride, with trials starting within six months. The pods will fit up to 12 people and are custom-built for the region’s extreme weather, with advanced air-conditioning and enhanced dust protection.
These new transport options will join the trackless trams that already run from Marina Mall to Reem Mall.
