Thinking of pulling over for “just a second” in the middle of the road? Think again
Abu Dhabi Police are sending out a clear reminder to drivers: those sudden, unnecessary stops are not just rude, they’re risky.
And yep, they could cost you more than just angry honks from other drivers.
Let’s break it down. Hitting the brakes out of nowhere can catch other road users completely off guard.
We’re talking fender benders, serious crashes, and in worst-case scenarios, even fatalities. So if you feel the need to stop, don’t just hit the brakes in the middle of the lane, steer towards the nearest safe spot like an exit or a designated parking area.
Even if there’s been a minor bump, drivers should move their cars off the main road to avoid putting others at risk.
And if your vehicle suddenly gives up on you? Only pull onto the shoulder if it’s a real emergency, and make sure your hazard lights are flashing to alert others.

The same goes for when you have to slow down because of traffic or an obstacle ahead; flick those hazards on so everyone behind you knows what’s happening.
Also, the usual good habits still apply: keep a safe gap between cars, obey speed limits, and always use your indicators.
So, what’s the penalty?
Decide to stop in the middle of the road for no good reason, and you’re looking at a fine of AED 1,000 plus six black points on your licence.
Block traffic while you’re at it? That’ll be another AED 500 added to your tab.
Moral of the story?
Save the sudden stops for actual emergencies. Because in Abu Dhabi, “just pulling over for a minute” might end up hitting you harder than you think, in the wallet and on your record.
