If you share your home with a four-legged best friend in Abu Dhabi, this is your official paw-lease take note moment.
From 3 February, registering your cats and dogs is no longer optional. Abu Dhabi Municipality has confirmed that the grace period is over, and unregistered pets could land their humans with a AED1,000 fine.
Forget to renew an existing registration? That’s another AED500. Ouch.
The good news? Registration is completely free, quick, and designed to make life easier for both pets and people.
What’s changing (and why it matters)
Under Abu Dhabi’s new animal ownership service, every dog and cat must be registered through the TAMM platform at a licensed veterinary clinic.
Once registered, your pet is officially logged into the emirate’s digital “Family Space”; a central system created to promote responsible ownership and better animal welfare.
Think of it as your pet’s official ID card, but cooler.
The initiative, led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), aims to:
Reduce the stray animal population
Create a central database for microchipped pets
Make identification easier if a pet gets lost
Improve overall animal welfare across the emirate
Who had time – and who didn’t
Individual pet owners were given a one-year grace period to register without penalties, which wraps up on 3 February.
Businesses and establishments, however, were expected to complete registration within six months, so enforcement is already well underway.

How to register your furry family member
Registering your pet is straightforward:
Log into TAMM using your UAE Pass
Visit a licensed veterinary clinic
Submit the required documents
Receive your animal registration certificate or file number
You’ll need:
A reference number
A veterinary medical report
A commercial licence (for establishments)
A few important things to know
Pets must be microchipped and vaccinated before a registration certificate is issued
Your pet must be older than 12 weeks
Younger pets receive a personal file number until they meet the age and vaccination requirements
Registration certificates are valid for one year and expire with the vaccination date
Zero tolerance
Abu Dhabi is also taking a firm stance on animal welfare. Abandoning a pet can result in a AED2,000 fine, while neglect or mistreatment may cost up to AED5,000 under UAE law.
Bottom line? Registering your pet isn’t just about avoiding fines; It’s about keeping Abu Dhabi safer, kinder, and more organised for animals and their humans alike. Your pet already thinks they’re family…now it’s official.
