Uber and WeRide launch fully autonomous rides across the city

Abu Dhabi has officially hit the fast lane of futuristic transport as driverless robotaxis from Uber and WeRide roll out across select parts of the city.

After weeks of private testing, autonomous rides are now available on Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Al Maryah Island, and Al Reem Island, running daily from 8 am to 10 pm.

Riders simply select the “autonomous” option in the Uber app, with both pick-up and drop-off points falling within the service zones.

The fleet currently includes nearly 70 van-style Robotaxi GXR vehicles, offering fares similar to Uber Comfort and Uber X, making this cutting-edge service surprisingly accessible.

These futuristic rides are packed with technology. Lidar sensors scan the surroundings with precision lasers to map the city in 3D, while radars and cameras keep track of every detail, ensuring a safe journey.

Abu Dhabi is the first city outside the US to host fully driverless robotaxi services on the Uber platform, marking a major step in the UAE’s vision for smart mobility.

The emirate is no stranger to autonomous vehicles, its own fleet of driverless taxis runs on Yas Island, but the addition of Uber and WeRide brings self-driving transport to the mainstream.

The service hits all the major spots, from Yas Mall and Galleria Mall to the Abrahamic Family House, making it convenient for shoppers, tourists, and locals alike.

Plans are already underway to scale the fleet across the Middle East, potentially putting thousands of robotaxis on the road in the years to come.
