Expect busy terminals as AUH prepares for a surge in travellers returning ahead of the new school term

As the summer holidays draw to a close, Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is preparing for a significant increase in traffic as families and students return ahead of the new academic year.

With record numbers expected in the second half of August, airport officials are urging travelers to arrive early, plan ahead, and take advantage of time-saving services to ensure smooth transit through the terminal.

AUH has experienced consistent growth in 2025 and is now preparing for one of its busiest back-to-school periods.

While exact figures have not been disclosed, the airport anticipates high-volume days up the end of August, especially as international flights return from popular holiday destinations.

What Travellers Should Do

Arrive early:

Etihad Airways passengers: recommended check-in is 3 to 4 hours before departure

Other carriers: arrive at least 3 hours early

Many airlines offer online and mobile check-in, which can save time at the airport

Use public transport or smart parking:

While Abu Dhabi’s Metro isn’t open yet, airport express buses, ride-hailing apps, and smart parking services help streamline access to the terminal. Plan your route in advance and allow extra time for peak travel periods.

Register for Smart Travel Services:

Eligible UAE residents and GCC nationals can use E-Gate or Smart Travel systems for faster passport control. These services are available at most AUH terminals and help avoid long immigration queues.

Pack smart & check airline policies:

Double-check baggage allowances, especially for budget airlines. Make sure liquids and electronics are packed according to security guidelines to avoid hold-ups during screening.

Use AUH’s real-time updates tools:

Stay on top of flight statuses, gate changes, and queue updates via the Abu Dhabi Airport mobile app or through digital displays in the terminal.

Abu Dhabi Airports is working closely with Etihad Airways, customs, immigration, and ground staff to help passengers enjoy a seamless and efficient experience.

Increased staffing, express check-in desks, and additional screening points will be in place to handle the seasonal surge.

Whether you’re flying in from a European summer break or heading back from family time abroad, give yourself extra time and use the available tech tools to take the stress out of travel.
