This five-minute illuminated experience transforms the mosque at the start of every Hijri month
The moon has a story, and now light is its narrator.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has unveiled ‘The Moon Has a Story… Told by Light,’ a new visual experience inspired by the phases of the moon and the UAE Hijri Calendar.
As part of initiatives linked to the UAE Hijri Calendar, officially issued by Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre as a precise and trusted reference for determining the beginning of Hijri months, the experience offers visitors a spectacular new way to mark the start of each lunar month.
The display takes place at the beginning of every Hijri month, with the mosque’s magnificent exterior becoming a canvas for an ever-changing sequence of light.
Colours shift from deep, atmospheric blue to brilliant white and back again, reflecting the changing appearance and brightness of the moon throughout its cycle.
The scale is impressive. More than 840 lighting units and 22 lighting towers illuminate the mosque’s exterior, while a specially developed “lunar clock” controls the display, mirroring the moon’s changing brightness throughout the month.
The result is an experience that feels both futuristic and deeply rooted in tradition, bringing together visual art, astronomy, architecture and Islamic heritage in one extraordinary spectacle.
The experience was introduced to announce the new Hijri month of Rabi’ Al-Awwal 1448H (the third month of the Islamic calendar), beginning on Friday, 1 Rabi’ Al-Awwal 1448H.
The inaugural display took place on the evening of the new crescent, Thursday, 29 Safar 1448H (the final day of the Islamic month of Safar), corresponding to 13 August 2026.
For those hoping to catch the experience, showtimes are 8pm, 8.30pm, 9pm, 9.30pm and 10pm, with each display lasting five minutes.
It may only last five minutes, but with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque glowing beneath the night sky, this is one celestial story visitors are unlikely to forget.
