Five lanes, new bridges and faster airport access
If you’ve ever found yourself crawling along the E20 through Khalifa City, there’s some good news on the horizon.
Abu Dhabi is giving one of its busiest roads a significant upgrade, with plans to widen the highway and improve access to one of the city’s fastest-growing areas.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced a major expansion of the E20 highway, increasing the road from three lanes to five in each direction.
The aim is to keep traffic moving more smoothly, reduce congestion and make journeys to and from Zayed International Airport quicker and easier.
It’s unclear when work will start and if there will be any traffic restrictions while it is ongoing, but we will keep you updated.
Why is this important for Abu Dhabi?
The E20 is a key route for thousands of commuters every day, linking Khalifa City with the airport and other parts of the capital.
With residential communities continuing to grow and passenger numbers at the airport increasing, the extra capacity is expected to make a noticeable difference once completed.
But it’s not just about adding more lanes. The project also includes the construction of four new bridges, as well as 10.5 kilometres of new ramps and loops.
These additions are designed to improve traffic flow at busy junctions, helping vehicles merge more efficiently and reducing the bottlenecks that regularly build up during peak hours.
Drivers living in Khalifa City will also benefit from better local connections. DMT is adding 1.5 kilometres of new internal roads to improve access around surrounding neighbourhoods, while eight new signalised junctions will help make getting in and out of residential areas safer and more straightforward.
There’s also an environmental element to the project. Landscaping works will introduce more greenery along the corridor, creating a more attractive roadside environment while complementing the wider development of the area.
Behind the scenes, a huge amount of infrastructure work is also taking place. The project includes the installation of a 62-kilometre stormwater drainage network to improve flood resilience during heavy rain, alongside a 37-kilometre irrigation network to support the new landscaping.
Nearly 500 new streetlights, 485 in total, will also be installed to improve visibility and safety for motorists travelling after dark.
The highway expansion forms part of DMT’s broader strategy to future-proof Abu Dhabi’s transport network.
As the emirate continues to welcome more residents, businesses and visitors, investment in roads and infrastructure is becoming increasingly important to keep people moving efficiently.
