Supervised road testing marks a first for Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi has taken another step toward a smarter transport future, with Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving (Supervised)’ road trials officially beginning in the Emirate.
The initiative, overseen by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), marks the first time Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance technology is being tested on public roads in Abu Dhabi under a structured regulatory framework.
The trials are being conducted with driver supervision and are designed to evaluate how the system performs in real-world operating conditions.
The goal is to assess operational efficiency, collect performance data, and verify safety readiness before any potential wider rollout.
The programme is being carried out in coordination with the Legislation Lab at the General Secretariat of the UAE Cabinet, reinforcing the government’s commitment to balancing innovation with safety and regulatory oversight.
By working within approved frameworks, Abu Dhabi aims to create a benchmark model for testing advanced driving technologies across the region.
A step toward self-driving taxis
While these trials focus on Tesla’s supervised system, the implications are far broader. Abu Dhabi has already signalled ambitions to expand autonomous mobility solutions, including the introduction of self-driving taxis.

Such services could transform daily commuting, reduce congestion, and support the Emirate’s sustainability goals by integrating electric and autonomous fleets into the wider transport network.
Flying delivery and air taxis
The launch of these trials also aligns with the UAE’s broader push into next-generation mobility, including flying delivery taxis and air taxi services currently under development across the country.
From autonomous ground vehicles to electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL), the region is positioning itself as a global testbed for futuristic transport solutions.
