NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is the place to be for contemporary art this January, hosting two compelling exhibitions in a rare back-to-back run
Rusting Echoes opened on 15 January, just as Ala Younis: Past of a Temporal Universe entered its final days, creating a three-day overlap that lets visitors experience both shows in one visit.
The new exhibition brings together Yoshi (Aisha Al Ali), Ammar Al Banna, Ahmed Al Kuwaiti, and Shaikha Al Shamsi.
Curated by Abu Dhabi-based art educator Sarrah Bashir, the show explores time not as something fixed, but as an emotional and material presence.
Visitors will encounter work that reflects impermanence, memory, process, and the quiet ways time leaves its mark through decay, resonance, and transformation.

This mid-career retrospective marks Younis’ first institutional survey in the region, presenting two decades of her hybrid practice across archival installations, textiles, murals, mosaics, and drawings.
Highlights include new works created in collaboration with historian Dr. Masha Kirasirova, supported by NYUAD’s Arts and Humanities Research Kitchens, and projects developed during her tenure as a research scholar at NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art.
Both exhibitions invite visitors to reflect on time, history, and memory from very different but equally immersive perspectives.
While Younis traced the weight of historical narratives and cultural memory, Rusting Echoes celebrates the fleeting, transformative qualities of time in everyday life.
