Flexible, efficient, and eco-friendly urban transport is on its way
Abu Dhabi is taking a big step into the future of transport with the launch of modular smart vehicles; a completely new kind of car designed to make city travel easier, faster, and greener.
So, what makes these vehicles “modular”? Simply put, they can connect or detach like building blocks depending on how many people are riding or what the vehicle is being used for.

As reported by wam.ae this week, modular smart vehicles are flexible, efficient, and eco-friendly, offering a peek at the future of urban transport, and Abu Dhabi is leading the way.
For example, if more people need a ride, two or three units can link together. If fewer passengers are traveling, a single unit can go solo.

This flexibility helps reduce traffic jams, move people more efficiently, and cut carbon emissions.
The first pilot of these vehicles is taking place on Yas Island, led by Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in partnership with companies like Emirates Driving Company, Liftango, Paradigma Innovation Hub, and NExT.
These vehicles don’t require any new roads or special infrastructure; they can operate on the city’s current streets.
Beyond carrying people, modular smart vehicles are also a testing ground for future technologies, like smart traffic management and autonomous driving.
Over time, they could play a big part in how Abu Dhabi rolls out self-driving cars across the city.
