UAE teachers are taking part in a new Arabic-language PGCE from the University of Buckingham – the first of its kind offered by a British university

Twelve teachers from private schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain have enrolled in the first-ever Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Arabic, a new qualification launched by the University of Buckingham.

The programme, developed in partnership with Brighton College UAE, aims to enhance Arabic language education and teacher training across the Emirates.

A milestone for Arabic language education in UAE schools

The University of Buckingham’s PGCE in Arabic – the first of its kind from a British university – mirrors the highly regarded UK-based model, adapted for Arabic-medium teaching.

Delivered entirely online and aligned with the British qualification framework, it is a Level 7 postgraduate qualification lasting 37 weeks, from September 2025 to March 2026.

The course combines weekly modules on teaching practice and reflection with in-school mentorship and lesson observations based on the English Teachers’ Standards.

Upon completion, teachers receive an internationally recognised qualification that supports career progression and strengthens classroom practice.

For pupils, this focus on teacher training will translate into more engaging and effective lessons in Arabic, Islamic Studies and UAE Social Studies, helping students build confidence in their language and deepen their connection to Emirati culture.

Craig Lamshed, General Manager of Bloom Education’s Brighton Colleges in the UAE, said the initiative represents a shared commitment to high standards in language education: “Through this partnership, our teachers will gain internationally recognised postgraduate certification that both celebrates our teachers’ expertise while strengthening their skills. At the same time, it will enrich pupils’ learning in Arabic and related subjects, inspiring greater appreciation of language, culture and values.”

Supporting the UAE’s education vision and teacher development

Dr Mayamin Altae, Assistant Professor of Education and Head of International Teacher Training Programmes at the University of Buckingham, added: “By teaching the PGCE in Arabic, we are equipping educators with the very best in global teaching practice while honouring their language and cultural identity.”

The programme aligns with the UAE’s Education 33 strategy, which focuses on academic excellence and cultural awareness, as well as with national initiatives such as the UAE’s 2025 ‘Year of the Community’ and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre’s efforts to deepen engagement with Arabic.
