From comics to recycled installations, Abu Dhabi schools celebrate World Art Day while championing creativity year-round

April marks World Art Day, a global celebration of artistic expression and imagination.

But at many of Abu Dhabi’s top schools, creativity isn’t limited to one day—it’s embedded into everyday learning.

Whether through collaborative projects, student-led exhibitions, or playful classroom moments, art is vital to a holistic education.

It helps children explore who they are, how they feel, and how they see and interpret the world around them.

And there’s good reason to celebrate creativity.

According to UNESCO, arts education enhances motor skills, decision-making, and visual learning.

Furthermore, studies from the OECD suggest that students engaged in the arts show stronger emotional regulation and problem-solving skills.

In today’s fast-paced world, art provides something vital: time to reflect, create, and imagine.

So, how are schools in the Capital bringing creativity to life?

Curiosity and enterprise at Raha International School, Gardens Campus (RIS Gardens)

At Raha International School Gardens Campus, creative learning is driven by student passion and authentic, hands-on experiences.

“Creativity comes from students following their passions and being driven by their own curiosity,” says Katee Van Campen, Head of Art.

“This year, with Comic Con, our students are showcasing how their creative passions can take them to new experiences and places in their art.”

In a pioneering partnership with the Middle East Film & Comic Con (MEFCC), students combined art-making with business planning and real-world execution.

“I’m hoping the students take away an understanding of how to engage an audience when discussing their work and how curating impacts perceptions,” adds Katee.

“As well as the entrepreneurial side of art and the associated costs.”

Students were mentored by industry professionals, including Rick Sharif, who provided insights into showcasing work at events like Comic Con.

Sustainability and self-expression at Raha International School, Khalifa City Campus (RISKCC)

At Raha International Khalifa City Campus, students explore creativity through a lens of innovation, sustainability, and community pride.

“Creativity is at the heart of our learning community,” says Primary Art Teacher Louise Cunningham. “It inspires students to think innovatively and express themselves uniquely.”

Students celebrated UAE National Day by crafting iconic animals from recycled materials—combining artistic flair with environmental awareness.

They also impressed in the Art of Recycling competition, themed ‘I Love Abu Dhabi,’ where discarded items were transformed into vibrant tributes to the Capital.

“At Raha, creating isn’t just a skill—it’s a passion we live every day,” adds Louise.

Creativity in the curriculum: A UAE-wide trend

Across Abu Dhabi and Dubai, many StandOut schools are investing in the arts—not just as a subject, but as a vital part of whole-child development.

From purpose-built studios and expert teaching staff to thriving extracurriculars and exhibition opportunities, creativity is firmly embedded into the school experience.

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi is located in Saadiyat Island’s Cultural District, which provides students with unique access to world-class institutions like the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Its strong arts programme includes specialist spaces like a 450-seat auditorium, black box theatre, and multiple art studios.

Students also participate in clubs such as Sketching and Art, while initiatives like Museum Voices and bsme art inspire creativity beyond the classroom.

British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS Abu Dhabi) enhances creativity through partnerships with The Juilliard School and showcases student work at events like the IB Visual Arts exhibition at Yas Mall.

The school offers dedicated art facilities and a wide range of creative ECAs spanning music, drama, and design.

Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi (NAS Abu Dhabi) boasts five art studios, a 450-seat auditorium, and specialised music and drama rooms, showcasing exceptional creative infrastructure.

Students benefit from global collaborations with Juilliard and MIT and can choose from over 95 enrichment activities, including STEAM, visual arts, and performing arts.

The British School Al Khubairat (BSAK) offers a vibrant arts programme with pathways in Fine Art, Photography, and Graphic Design at GCSE and A Level.

The school features four specialist art studios and a central gallery space, with enrichment through UK university collaborations and creative trips to cities like Berlin and New York.

As the UAE continues to invest in culture and innovation, creativity is becoming ever more central to education.

While World Art Day may come just once a year, at Abu Dhabi’s top schools, imagination, expression, and artistic thinking are woven into the fabric of learning.
