Irish teacher launches an innovative platform dedicated to supporting people with Celiac disease
In recent years, the celiac disease movement has been steadily growing in the UAE, with more people being diagnosed and actively seeking support.
Celiac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten, can make daily life challenging, especially when dining out or navigating grocery stores.
However, the increasing awareness and initiatives to support those living with the condition are turning these challenges into opportunities for positive change.
A key figure leading this movement is UAE resident Michelle Lyons, who has recently launched celiac.ae; an innovative platform dedicated to supporting people with celiac disease.
Through this initiative, Michelle is not only raising awareness but also making it easier for individuals to find safe and reliable gluten-free options in the UAE.
Living with celiac disease since the age of three, Michelle, originally from Ireland, has first-hand experience of the difficulties that come with managing the condition.
Celiac disease occurs when the immune system reacts to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, and the only effective treatment is following a strict gluten-free diet.
Despite facing limited support and awareness in both Ireland and the UAE, Michelle was determined to make a difference.
Upon moving to the UAE in 2019, she quickly realised that dining out was a significant challenge due to a lack of understanding of the condition, often leading to her experiencing cross-contamination from gluten. This meant that she had to cook at home or bring her own food when dining out.
Recognising the rising number of celiac diagnoses globally, and particularly in the UAE, where 3 in every 100 children are diagnosed, Michelle saw a unique opportunity to create a supportive community.
With this vision, she launched celiac.ae to provide practical advice, resources, and a thriving community for those navigating a gluten-free lifestyle in the UAE.
One of the many successes of Michelle’s work has been helping celiacs find safe dining options, partnering with local restaurants to train staff in serving gluten-free food safely.

A standout achievement includes collaborating with the popular Irish restaurant, MA Buckley’s, to develop a dedicated gluten-free menu and introduce strict measures to prevent cross-contamination.
Michelle’s mission is to encourage even more restaurants and eateries in the capital to offer gluten-free choices, ultimately ensuring that dining out is a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Her work extends beyond the culinary world, by collaborating with local doctors, dietitians, and hosting community events like coffee mornings and information sessions, she is fostering a vibrant and supportive network where individuals with celiac disease can connect, share experiences, and find encouragement.
Michelle is wholeheartedly committed to making the UAE a safer, more inclusive place for those with celiac disease.
Whether it’s advocating for more gluten-free dining options or providing resources and support to the celiac community, her goal is clear: to ensure that no one has to face the challenges of living gluten-free alone.
Through her efforts, she is transforming what was once a challenge into a thriving, empowering movement for celiacs in the UAE.
