Abu Dhabi rolls out new pet ownership rules
Calling all cat parents and doggy dads; it’s time to put your furry friends on the record! Abu Dhabi is launching a paw-sitive new initiative requiring residents to register their microchipped cats and dogs starting 3 February.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) made the announcement this week, giving pet owners plenty of time to paws and comply.
A year to fetch compliance
For individual pet owners, the clock starts ticking on 3 February, with a generous one-year grace period to complete the registration process without any penalties.
But here’s the tail wag; establishments like pet shops and kennels must leap into action faster, with a six-month deadline to get their furry clients signed up.
No bones about it: Free registration for now
The best news? Registration is free until further notice! Starting next month, pet owners can strut their stuff to veterinary facilities to register their beloved companions.
The process will be streamlined through the TAMM portal, where establishments can also register animals, update details, and transfer ownership with ease.
Why the bark about registration?
The DMT’s new programme isn’t just about dotting the “i”s in “fido” or crossing the “t”s in “cat.” It’s part of a broader mission to improve the lives of Abu Dhabi’s pets and their humans. Here’s what they aim to achieve:
Tame the stray situation: By tracking owned pets, the initiative hopes to reduce the number of stray animals roaming the streets.
Keep tabs on health: A centralised database ensures better monitoring of vaccinations, microchipping, and veterinary care.
Proper identification: Lost pets? Not anymore! With every cat and dog properly registered, owners can reunite with their fur babies faster.
Animal welfare First: From wagging tails to purring pals, every pet deserves top-notch care.

The CATalog of care
This pet project isn’t just about keeping records; it’s about encouraging paw-some habits among pet owners.
Annual vaccinations, regular vet check-ups, and updated microchipping are all part of the deal. After all, a healthy pet is a happy pet!
Ready, set, register!
So, mark your calendars, Abu Dhabi! This kicks off a new chapter in pet ownership that’s all about wagging tails and purring approval.
Don’t let your pet miss out on this fetch-tastic initiative; because every good boy (and girl) deserves to be officially on the books.
