The microplastic levels in Abu Dhabi will be monitored by EAD and ADQCC over the coming weeks

In a proactive move towards environmental conservation, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) have joined forces to access microplastic pollution in local marine environments.

The agencies have converged to conduct a comprehensive study aimed at understanding and mitigating microplastic pollution in the emirate’s marine environment.

The collaborative effort will involve the collection of marine sediment, water, and biota samples from key locations across Abu Dhabi.

These samples will undergo rigorous laboratory testing and analysis, leveraging EAD’s scientific expertise and research capabilities in tandem with QCC’s state-of-the-art laboratory techniques.

Microplastics, tiny plastic particles that persist in the environment for extended periods, pose a significant threat to ecosystems by being ingested by marine and terrestrial organisms, potentially causing harm to wildlife and disrupting ecosystems.

The partnership in addressing this pressing issue represents a significant step forward in environmental preservation and protection.

The agencies will be employing advanced techniques in identifying and quantifying microplastic particles, thereby discerning their origins and distribution within marine environments.

The collaborative survey, conducted aboard the marine research vessel ‘Jaywun,’ aims to provide valuable insights into the accumulation of microplastics in Abu Dhabi waters, ultimately paving the way for effective measures to mitigate their impact on the marine ecosystem.
