PARTNER CONTENT: The British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS Abu Dhabi) continues to set itself apart as an educational institution that goes beyond traditional boundaries, and the new Creative Technology Zone is a testament to the School’s vision of preparing students for a future where technological fluency and creativity are paramount.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the 21st century, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Computer Science (CS), and Design Technology (DT) have emerged as crucial pillars in shaping a technological future.

BIS Abu Dhabi serves as a gateway for students to explore and excel in these fields, offering a multifaceted approach to education and paving the way for diverse and rewarding career paths.

Critical thinking skills

One of the main goals of Creative Technology in BIS Abu Dhabi is to develop students who can solve real-life problems. Students have the opportunity to apply their Design Thinking and Computational Thinking skills to analyse, evaluate and produce a prototype to their given problem.

Students with these characteristics are aligned perfectly with the ever-changing needs of a 21st-century workforce. Advanced economies, innovative industries and firms, and high-growth jobs require more educated workers equipped with the ability to respond to complex problems, communicate effectively, manage information, work in teams, and produce knowledge.

Creative technology

The state-of-the-art new Creative Technology Zone at the school facilitates different subjects which provides students with access to not only numerous university courses, but also encourages them to forge their own career path.

The Zone is currently a four-teacher department offering ICT, CS and DT. Computer Science is currently offered at Key Stage (KS)3, IGCSE, and IB level. ICT is offered at KS3 and IGCSE and it will be offered as a BTEC course for the first time next academic year. Design Technology is an exciting addition to the school’s curriculum and is gaining popularity among students.

Starting from the upcoming academic year, it will be offered at IGCSE level for the first time. Displaying his own infectious enthusiasm as he invited us into his classroom, Design & Technology teacher Ted O’Brien showcases the cutting-edge new facility.

“We believe environment plays a crucial role on learning – our open plan space aims to move away from the traditional classroom layout. Through the integration of new and emerging technologies, students feel empowered to collaborate and explore.”

Career paths

It is well documented that universities are increasingly seeking students with strong Design Thinking and Computation Thinking skills due to the recognition of the profound impact this approach can have on problem-solving, innovation and adaptability.

These skills go beyond traditional academic disciplines and offer a holistic framework for addressing complex challenges. The Design Technology IGCSE course not only equips students with the necessary life problem solving skills, but also opens many different career paths.

Aspiring designers, engineers, and architects can leverage this qualification to embark on careers in product design, industrial engineering, and sustainable architecture. The overall concept of the Zone is easy to realise as the teachers want the students to understand and appreciate the link between the subjects.

Indeed, this cross-curricular attitude is illustrated by the current IGCSE students who recently designed and constructed a model Formula 1 car, utilising all aspects of Creative Technology subjects to produce the finished product.

Computer Science teacher Christopher Gildroy explains the rationale behind this process: “We really want our students to understand how we can use the skills and knowledge acquired to produce a finished product that solves a real-world problem.”

Computer Science is one subject that students can undertake from Key Stage 3 all the way to IB. Starting with ICT at IGCSE level, students focus on programming, algorithmic design, and computational thinking with graduates in this field becoming well-prepared for careers in IT solutions, software development, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and coding. Overall, DT, ICT, and Computer Science are not merely stepping stones to higher education but are gateways to promising and diverse career paths.

By combining these qualifications, students can position themselves as dynamic professionals capable of navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the digital age.

University courses

BIS Abu Dhabi offers two distinct pathways into University through the IB Diploma Programme (exam based) and BTEC (continuous assessment) systems. They are also offering students the chance to combine elements of both programmes and continue to add to their BTEC options every year.

The School already offers BTEC International Level 3 Business, which commenced in the present academic year, and will be making BTEC ICT and Sport available in the new academic year this coming September.

Such qualifications offer distinct advantages for students pursuing university education and their practical approach equips learners with hands-on skills, enhancing employability opportunities.

Additionally, BTECs provide a flexible learning pathway, allowing students to specialise in areas such as business, science, or engineering. The coursework assessment structure fosters continuous evaluation, promoting a deeper understanding of subjects.

This comprehensive preparation not only facilitates smoother transitions into university, but also nurtures well-rounded individuals ready to tackle academic challenges with practical insights.

With the varied curriculum being offered at BIS Abu Dhabi, the School is ensuring that every student has access to a pathway that aligns with their goals and aspirations for the future.

By offering diverse avenues to accommodate the unique strengths and interests of each student, they are preparing them to meet the demands of tomorrow.
