It is not the first time that Fossil Dunes has been closed to the public

Fossil Dunes and Al Wathba Wetlands are two fabulous locations for nature explorers in Abu Dhabi.

With that in mind, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi has announced on their social media channels that in order to enhance the public’s ecotourism experience, both reserves are set to close to the public.

The good news is that the closure is just on a temporary basis and there will be opportunities for all of you nature lovers out there to visit these acclaimed spots again in the future.

The Agency stated that the protected areas will be temporarily closed for development purposes. However, no future date was given for the reopening of the areas, other than ‘soon’.

Back in May 2021, The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi rolled out campaigns aimed at educating the public in regard to the site’s importance, after a glut of social media posts appeared complaining about how visitors were damaging the ancient dunes, with evidence showing people had been drawing and writing on the centuries-old fossil.

These were some of the factors that led The Agency to continue to implement a comprehensive plan to develop and protect Al Wathba Fossil Dunes, which included developing the site’s infrastructure, services and tourism facilities, and work to declare the site as a natural reserve to protect the emirate’s natural heritage and encourage eco-tourism.
