As part of the UAE capital’s push towards a sustainable future, the emirate has launched a new fleet of emission-free taxis.
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport has not revealed the exact number of Tesla taxis plying Abu Dhabi’s roads, but Abdullah Al Marzouqi, ITC director general, said the new taxi fleet is a strategic move to promote Abu Dhabi as a model for sustainable and environmentally friendly transport system, in line with its “Green Economy for Sustainable Development” initiative.
ITC launched the new vehicles in cooperation with Arabia Taxi Transportation, one of Abu Dhabi’s seven taxi franchisees.
Abu Dhabi’s transport regulator has been aggressively introducing environmentally friendly solutions to its 6,000-strong taxi fleet. Since 2019, hybrid vehicles account for more than 85 per cent of Abu Dhabi’s fleet, running on a mix of natural gas and hydrocarbon fuels.
While its impact on the environment is beyond doubt, the use of Tesla vehicles as taxis also delivers a range of lifestyle benefits to Abu Dhabi’s commuters.
