To be held in Egypt from 6-18 November, there was also a Countdown to Cop27 event recently concluded in Abu Dhabi.
Returning to the Global South for the second time since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015 is the UN Climate Change Conference 2022, better known as Cop27.
According to a WAM report, the conference is scheduled to be held from 6-18 November 2022 at Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. On agenda are efforts to mitigate climate change, to adapt to climate impacts, the need for increased climate finance, and clarity on loss and damage caused by environmental factors.
In contrast to mitigation and adaptation being the focus of previous climate summits, Egypt has astutely included ‘loss and damage’. Given that smaller or developing countries have for many decades borne the brunt of environmental damage inflicted by their richer counterparts, this topic essentially serves as some form of compensation.
According to an editorial by The National, the Countdown to Cop27 event in Abu Dhabi saw a panel of expert speakers, including Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan, Founder and Chief Executive of the Alliances for Global Sustainability, as well co-founder of Aurora50.
Granddaughter of the late President Sheikh Khalifa and the first woman in the GCC in her capacity, she was recently honoured in Washington for her work to combat climate change.
Hosted by FAB and held at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort, London, as well as online, the event was part of a Sustainability Week staged by The Economist. The talks centred around the UAE’s bid to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
The UAE will be playing host for the Cop28 summit in 2023 at Expo City Dubai. Presently, the UAE delegation at Cop27 will study what is being discussed in Egypt to better understand the differentiated priorities of the international community.
