Etihad Airways soars festively higher with two prestigious sustainability awards.
The festive season puts everyone in a cheerful mood and for Etihad Airways, things might be looking grander – and greener – than before. Already, the airline has rolled out several environmentally friendly initiatives, from planting a mangrove tree for each economy seat sold to flying aircraft that leave a smaller carbon footprint.
And the UAE’s national carrier also has several programmes in place for travellers to adopt a greener choice – and be rewarded for it. By choosing to take less baggage, the airline cuts down its carbon emission by at least five per cent. Not only that, it is also cutting down on the waste produced and using sustainable fuel to run the aircraft while advocating for the preservation of wildlife, making every effort to leave the Earth greener than before. Needless to say, Etihad Airways is going above and beyond – quite literally – in changing the face of sustainable aviation.
With several accolades under its wings already, it comes as no surprise that Etihad Airways has now won two prestigious sustainability awards – The Environmental Sustainability Innovation of the Year award at CAPA’s annual Environmental Sustainability Awards for Excellence in Singapore; as well as the Best Airline for Sustainability 2022 award by Business Traveler USA.
“This year has been an important year for us with many milestones and achievements we are proud of,” says Mariam Al Qubaisi, Head of Sustainability and Excellence, Etihad Airways. “These two awards from CAPA Aviation and Business Traveler USA cap off a year where we were also named Environmental Airline of the Year 2022 by Airline Ratings. We enter 2023 with a continued commitment to collaborating with our partners to support the industry in its mission to achieve net zero by 2050.”
Adding another feather to its hat, Etihad Airways has pledged to reach a 20 per cent reduction in emissions intensity by 2025, and more than half by 2035. It also promises to remove the same amount of emissions from the atmosphere that they may produce, cutting down to net zero emissions by 2050 to create a greener and more pleasant planet for all of us.
