Workshops aim to create awareness among the community including students

Libraries in Abu Dhabi are undoubtedly at the heart of the community and are the perfect venues to educate the public, including school students, on issues that matter.

Now, MAKTABA, or the Library Management department – a subdivision in the Dar Al Kutub Sector, at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, is doing just that.

Already known far and wide for the administration of public libraries in Abu Dhabi and providing a diverse programme of educational events and activities for the local community, MAKTABA has rolled out a series of workshops whose aim is to create awareness among the community, including students, on much needed sustainability issues.

It is a project that has been set in place since the academic year began in September 2023, according to Fatema Altamimi, Branches Library Section Head, Library Management Department of Culture Sector at DCT Abu Dhabi.

“The workshops align with the Year of Sustainable 2023,” says Fatema. “We decided, MAKTABA, which is under the umbrella of Department of Tourism and culture, to create and plan for a full programme about sustainability in a different way.

“The aim is to think about, and indeed execute, ideas on how we can spread awareness about sustainability among the community, especially students.”

To do this, the team at MAKTABA introduced workshops that target adults, including schools.

“Today, for example, the workshop at Al Bahia library is targeting high school students,” adds Fatema.

Other workshops are taking place at Khalifa Park Library and in Al Ain, among others. Fatema shares that workshops explore diverse topics with titles such as Smart Environments, which involves sustainable gardening and teaching families or parents how to plant vegetables and other plants at home.

“The topic of organic vegetables and food is explored in order to create awareness,’ she says.

The workshops also involve inviting experts from a certain field, who can share their knowledge on specific subjects.
