The former HSBC champion reflects on Abu Dhabi success ahead of Team Cup 2025

This weekend, golf fans will gather in Abu Dhabi for the much-anticipated Team Cup 2025, and among the star players gracing the event is none other than Tommy Fleetwood.

A familiar face on the Abu Dhabi greens, Fleetwood sat down to discuss his experiences, his love for the course, and how the UAE continues to play a pivotal role in the growth of golf.

A special connection with Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has been a “happy hunting ground” for Fleetwood, though his relationship with the course wasn’t always as seamless. Reflecting on his early struggles, Fleetwood shared,

“Well the first six years that I played here on tour, I missed the cut five times and did okay one other time. But I don’t know what it was in 2017; something clicked around the course, and yeah, one back-to-back. I won ’17 and ’18.”

Since then, Fleetwood has built a strong connection with the course, having come close to victory on other occasions as well.

“I think I just started to see good shots around here and feel comfortable. It’s turned into one of those places that you end up feeling comfortable,” he added.

“You remember the good shots you’ve hit. It holds happy memories, and I’ve always thought it’s a great golf course.”

Preparing for Team Competition

While Fleetwood is no stranger to the pressures of competition, team events bring a different dynamic. When asked about the adjustments made for match play compared to individual tournaments, he explained:

“You have to prepare however best you think you’re going to give yourself the best chance of performing well, which you do any given week. Of course, there’s some team format stuff-playing four balls or foursomes-and a little bit of golf ball work if you’re playing with a different ball.”

Fleetwood also acknowledged the unique demands of team events.

“The thing about the team stuff is you’re not on your own individual time anymore. There are different commitments, different demands. You just have to embrace all of that as well.

“It’s a different week, but at the same time, you’re doing everything you believe is going to give yourself the best chance to play well.”

The UAE: A growing hub for golf

Having spent significant time in the UAE over his career, Fleetwood has witnessed firsthand the region’s growing passion for golf.

“UAE is a hugely important part. Ever since I’ve been a professional, it’s been the start of my season and pretty much the end of my season. It’s played a huge role in life as a touring professional,” he said.

Fleetwood also highlighted the impressive development of the sport at all levels in the UAE.

“I think it continues to grow at all levels, from grassroots to junior and amateur levels. One thing I’ve noticed since being out here is the level of coaching is very good, almost underrated on a global scale. There are phenomenal coaches with amazing facilities,” he remarked.

For Fleetwood, the presence of top-tier tour players choosing to reside in the UAE is further evidence of its appeal.

“There are a lot of tour players that live out here now, which shows that it’s a great destination. For us, we’re not going to move somewhere if it’s not going to help our careers,” he explained.

Looking ahead

As Fleetwood prepares for the weekend’s competition, his connection with Abu Dhabi’s iconic course and the broader golfing community in the UAE will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in his performance.

With fond memories and a strong foundation of preparation, Fleetwood is set to make another mark in the city that has become a cornerstone of his professional journey.

Golf enthusiasts can expect a thrilling display of talent and teamwork as Fleetwood and other top players compete in the Team Cup 2025. Will the Abu Dhabi magic work in his favour once again? Only time will tell.
