Throwback: Worlds in a museum symposium!

10 – 11 November 2018

As part of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s first anniversary celebration in 2018, the museum hosted a two-day symposium in collaboration with École du Louvre addressing the role of museums in a globalised world.

The symposium brought together leaders in the field to discuss contemporary museology in the form of keynote speeches and panel discussions. One year after Louvre Abu Dhabi’s opening, the symposium explored and questioned the DNA of this new member of the international museum community, the first universal museum in the Arab world.

To explore some of the highlights of this international symposium, you can listen to keynote speeches, read abstracts, biographies and more!

Highlights of the Collection

This room of the museum presents the woodwork and panelling from an aristocratic mansion of the 17th century, recreating the volumes and appearance of an interior during the Grand Siècle. It was in this period that a sophisticated art of living inspired by the life of the court led to the division of the spaces in aristocratic mansions into living rooms and reception rooms, chambers and antechambers, galleries and studies.

The study was a private space for the master of the house to work, but also to keep his precious objects, books and paintings, which made it also a place open to art lovers. The decor of this study consists of a ceiling, low panelling and four doors. The rest of the wall space would have been covered with material, generally silk in a plain colour, to set off the paintings.
