UAE family and personal law to be overhauled, to be more expat-friendly

Amendments cover women’s rights and alcohol consumption, among others.

The UAE Government announces amendments to some of its personal and family laws, in a bid to improve the living standards for the country’s multicultural residents, which according to The National, are effective immediately.

The aim of the amendments, which includes the decriminalisation of the consumption of alcohol, aims to improve the living standards for the country’s multicultural residents.

According to the report in The National, the amendments cover a range of laws, including divorce, unmarried couples cohabiting and women’s rights.

For those undergoing divorce, the changes will see the laws of the country where the marriage took place applied.

Men who harass women will face tougher punishments. This includes street harassment and stalking. For those who commit rape, punishment will be severe.

It was also reported that several other law changes relating to the court system, inheritance, judicial procedure and mental health have been outlined.
