WIN! Tickets to Cartography

Learn about migration stories of refugee youth through a stunning theatrical performance premiering in the Middle East.

A new theatrical work that explores the commonalities of migration and mapping at the center of worlds in motion that places all of us in this historical moment of the largest migration in recorded history. Created in collaboration with artist Kaneza Schaal and writer Christopher Myers, Cartography draws on their work with refugee youth.

A wonder of theater-making, Cartography is a production full of cracking story-telling with booming contemporary musical interludes between scenes.” – DC Metro

Created for the whole family to experience, Cartography aims to engage young audiences. Visual tools like map-making and inventory meet performance elements such as filmmaking and dancing; sculptures create an array of visual journeys; sound sensor technology responds to actors’ voices, activating a virtual storm; cellphones are used to mark memories and distances traveled. Developed in part at NYU Abu Dhabi, including the work of NYUAD Interactive Media graduates.

Mapping Migration

Abu Dhabi is a community of movers and shakers. Cartography examines how, why, and where we move in a poignant performance that’s perfect for the whole family.

Back by popular demand, Cartography explores the commonalities of migration and mapping at the center of worlds in motion. Created in collaboration with artist Kaneza Schaal and writer Christopher Myers, Cartography draws on their work with refugee youth.

Perfect for the whole family, Cartography aims to engage young audiences to examine where we’re all ‘from’ and to ponder whether or not the question was ever even slightly relevant.

Cartography is a performance where visual tools, such as map-making, meet performance elements, such as filmmaking and dancing, and sculptures, to create an array of visual journeys. Sound sensor technology responds to actors’ voices, activating a virtual storm; cellphones are used to mark memories and distances travelled by participants in the audience.

“We are so proud that The Arts Center is a co-commissioner of Cartography, and to have been able to help develop the digital scenography in residency at The Arts Center during Ramadan 2 years ago’, explains Bill Bragin, Executive Artistic Director of The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi.

Bill adds, ‘the piece, designed for young audiences in middle and high school, as well as their families, looks at the migration stories of youth of the same age. The piece is filled with empathy, humor, intelligence and lots of heart. Cartography is a powerful meditation on maps, fences, journeys, memory, and the meaning of home, themes that will resonate for the audiences in the UAE’.

The audience is invited to examine their own lives, and the maps we have yet to draw and will draw in real time.

This performance is for all ages.
