18-October-2021

Tyrell Hatton won this year’s tournament.

From 2022, the world’s best golfers will be showcasing their skills on a different golf course when they come to Abu Dhabi.

Announced by Abu Dhabi Sports Council and the European Tour today (18 October), the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship will move to Yas Links Abu Dhabi for the opening Rolex Series event for the 2022 season.

Designed by Kyle Phillips and recently ranked 48th in Golf Digest’s global Top 100 courses, the Yas Island based golf course will take over from Abu Dhabi Golf Club who has hosted the tournament since its inception in 2006.

Pencilled into the golf diary for 20 to 23 January, the revelation is another feather in Yas Island’s sporting cap who will be hosting UFC 267 and the Harlem Globetrotters in November and the final round of the Formula 1 World Championship and FINA World Swimming Championships in December.

Speaking on the announcement His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said the move to Yas Island added to reputation as one of the world’s top leisure and entertainment destinations.

HE Aref Al Awani said: “We are proud of all our sports facilities that host various events and support our plans for further success.

“By moving this award-winning tournament to Yas Links for the first time, we will add more excellence to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and present an exceptional event, especially as it is being held at one of the world’s finest and most magnificent golf courses, and on one of the world’s leading leisure and entertainment destinations, Yas Island.

“We are looking forward to another fantastic Championship to kick off an exciting year of sport in the UAE.”

CEO of the European Tour Keith Pelley said Yas Links Abu Dhabi would offer players and fans a new experience.

He said: “As one of our Rolex Series events, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and Yas Links offer our players and fans an experience like no other.

“Yas Island is synonymous with major sporting events in the United Arab Emirates and we are delighted our first Rolex Series tournament of the year will be highlighted on the global stage.”

The 2021 Abu Dhabi HBSC Championship was won by Englishman, Tyrrell Hatton, by four shots at the start of the year.
