The Importance of First Aid Training

It’s inevitable: children have accidents. Whether at home, playing at the park, or in the car, your child is bound to have an accident at one point during their childhood, but proper first aid training could, very scarily, mean the difference between life or death when those accidents happen.

Parents, nannies, and other domestic helpers in the UAE often begin caring for our loved ones without completing proper first aid training. While everyone could benefit from first aid training, it’s of particular importance that nannies and other caregivers receive proper training in emergency medical care techniques.

What is First Aid Training?

First aid is best defined as the quick application of emergency medical support to individuals who are ill or injured. When successfully applied to people with minor injuries or illnesses, the patient should not require further medical treatment. In severe medical emergencies, the application of proper first aid care can make the difference between life and death, or in the individual in need experiencing additional injury. The first aid assistance can be provided while waiting for appropriate medical assistance.

What Type of First Aid Class Should I Take?

If you are a nanny or domestic caregiver in the UAE, it would be to your professional advantage to become certified in CPR and other basic first aid medical techniques. Ranging from 4 to 6 hours, entry level first aid classes provide a number of lifesaving medical techniques.

The following categories should be covered in depth in a basic first aid course:

  • Choking
  • Burns
  • Poisoning
  • Drowning or not breathing
  • Bleeding
  • High fever or seizures (fitting)
  • Stings and bites
  • Fractures or broken bones
  • Head and spinal injuries
  • Shock
  • Communicable diseases

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a medical technique that could save the life of a child that has stopped breathing or is choking. However, when performed incorrectly, CPR could cause damage. A first aid certificate from a reputable training firm provides concrete proof to parents and potential employers that their child and loved ones are in the best hands in the event of a medical emergency. Additionally, your nanny or maid should also learn about child safety, establishing a child-proof environment, and identifying potential dangers and hazards.
