Women’s History Month: Explore the facets of women’s healthcare to focus on for a healthier life
As healthcare continues to evolve, the spotlight on women’s well-being has never been more critical. In the UAE, particularly in Abu Dhabi, women are encouraged to prioritise their health through access to a myriad of services and initiatives tailored to their unique needs. From reproductive health to mental wellness and beyond, women are being consistently empowered to take charge of their healthcare journey with a range of resources at their disposal.
Areas of focus
One of the cornerstones of women’s well-being has always remained their reproductive health, which encompasses a plethora of causes from cervical to breast cancer examinations.
While pap screenings and mammograms are considered mandatory for women after the ages of 25, it is equally important to continue the journey well after menopause hits. Regular screenings for the above are readily available across various healthcare facilities in the emirate, which should be prioritised to for early detection, timely intervention and treatment.
Additionally, maintaining a nutritious diet supplemented by regular exercise is a great step towards maintaining cardiovascular health as well. Heart issues and even blood pressure changes are often neglected by women, but living in a fast-paced and dynamic environment means these could lead to dire issues if not managed in time.

Another critical area of care is mental health awareness and support. As societal norms evolve to destigmatise discussions surrounding mental well-being, women are encouraged to reach out to mental health professionals for aid regarding a myriad of issues, ranging from stress and anxiety to postpartum depression and beyond.
That being said, a crucial component of women’s healthcare involves access to affordable and even free services, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their ability to prioritise their health. Fortunately, there are several hospitals in the UAE capital that can cater to the diverse healthcare needs of women throughout the years.
Free campaigns
One such option is the educational programmess and workshops often organised across the emirate.
From Wellness Day workshops at Umm Al Emarat Park to regular workshops conducted by experts at Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women and Children and more, there is no dearth of opportunities to foster a culture of proactive healthcare seeking.
Abu Dhabi Healthcare Company (SEHA) too operates various healthcare facilities across the emirate. SEHA hospitals, including Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and Tawam Hospital are among other institutions that offer free or subsidised screenings and consultations for women, encompassing a wide range of specialties such as gynaecology, obstetrics, and breast health.
Furthermore, initiatives such as the ‘Pink Caravan’ campaign, organised by the Friends of Cancer Patients charity, should be looked out for especially during October or breast cancer awareness month for free screenings.
With most insurances covering basic general check-ups, undergoing these on the regular to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other vital signs is a significant step towards preventive care for women in the UAE.
