These sushi classes for the family at Al Forsan are absolutely brilliant

Let it roll with these fab sushi classes at Al Forsan.

These sushi classes at Al Forsan are a great way to involve the family and the great thing is they happen every weekend and last week Team Yalla had a go. See how it went!

The weekend’s here; there’s fun to be had and where better than to head on a Sunday to Al Forsan International Sports Resorts, where chef Sudarssan is waiting to teach you the art of rolling sushi.

Evidently, the Sushi Class at KISHI, the resort’s renowned Japanese restaurant, is a perfect family affair and along with Team Yalla, several families join this brilliant two-hour class, notably Emiratis’ Abdallah Farah, aged eight years old and his younger brother, six-year-old Hamdan, our fellow class buddies who rolled sushi like Japanese masters.

There’s a welcome drink on arrival and all the ingredients you’ll need, rolling board and other resources are set out for each guest, and at the helm is Sudarssan, guiding us through the steps of getting us ready to roll sushi like a professional.

It’s our first time, so understandable there’s a slight touch of the nerves, but fear not, the atmosphere is jovial and the class is as much about having fun as it is creating sushi, and apart from being a talented chef, Sudarssan is also a master of putting his students at ease, old and young alike.

On the menu is miso soup, several types of maki – California roll, shrimp tempura, and vegetable sushi rolls; all of which –28 rolls each and the soup – we get to devour at the end, a well-deserved reward after all that rolling!

First off is miso soup, which instantly begs the question from the knowledge-hungry students, what exactly is miso? Soybean paste from Japan, Sudarssan informs us, as he talks us through the steps of making this traditional Japanese soup.

It’s easier than you think and the sense of achievement is tangible as we get to taste our finished dish made by our very own hands, before we are plunged into the art of sushi rolling.

Sudarssan is a patient, exacting sushi teacher who’s ready to repeat the steps of layering the ingredients such as sushi rice, toasted nori (a dried edible seaweed used in Japanese cooking), slices of avocado, carrot and cucumber, before the art of rolling ensues.

There are fits of the giggles from children and adults alike, but we encourage each other until we turnout what resembles a rather long sushi roll that looks the part.

The roll is then cut into bite size pieces before being displayed on our individual serving plates. The process is repeated for each type of maki and each time our confidence grows.

The Sushi Class at this renowned Japanese restaurant takes place every Sunday at 11am and offers a great way to make new friends and to sharpen your culinary skills Japanese style.

Our verdict? Roll with it!
