From live concerts to global mentorships and powerful exhibitions, Sorbonne Abu Dhabi is marking Women’s Month in style

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) is marking International Women’s Day with a full month of impactful initiatives designed to celebrate, support, and spotlight women’s achievements—past, present, and future.

From academic research and art exhibitions to global mentoring programmes and musical tributes, the university’s theme ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment’ sets the tone for a series of engaging events.

In a major nod to cultural icons, SUAD will rename its iconic Oval Room after Arab music legend Umm Kulthum, honouring her enduring legacy and influence. To mark the 50th anniversary of her passing, SUAD will host a live tribute concert by acclaimed Tunisian artist Ghalia Benali on 16 April.

Art lovers can also catch Lumières de Femmes, a vibrant exhibition running until 29 March. It showcases works by 23 French and Francophone women artists, including Emirati artist Khulood Al Jabri. The show is a creative celebration of women’s voices and stories, open to the wider community.

On the academic front, SUAD has launched a Call for Proposals, encouraging researchers and creatives to explore women’s empowerment across disciplines. Selected projects will receive support and funding, and their outcomes range from research papers to public performances.

Reinforcing its commitment to education as a force for change, SUAD Chancellor Professor Nathalie Martial-Braz said: This month, we honour the voices of the past, celebrate the achievements of today, and invest in the changemakers of tomorrow… We firmly believe that education and research open infinite horizons, and we are committed to creating an environment where women can thrive, equipped with the right resources and support to drive positive change.”

Five exceptional SUAD students have also been selected to join the prestigious Women@Dior & UNESCO mentoring programme, another powerful step in preparing the next generation of changemakers.
