There is a culture of giving and service at the core of The British School Al Khubairat’s purpose, decisions and action.
PARTNER CONTENT: The British School Al Khubairat (BSAK) is no stranger to winning awards, yet this is not the School’s focus nor its aim.
The philosophy of ‘students come first’ is paramount and has been for over 50 years, with students always at the very centre of all that it does.
This academic year sees Steve Oakes proudly take up the role of Head of Sixth Form at the School. Steve has been a Sixth Form teacher for over 20 years and is also the co-author of three books that examine the student mindset, and ways to support them on their academic journey. He is excited to be joining this vibrant and established community and to have the opportunity to share his expertise.
As well as a strong focus on reaching for academic success, there is a culture of giving and service at the core of the School’s purpose, decisions and actions.
This combined with a personal approach to each young person, helps them develop a holistic outlook on life itself and life after BSAK.
With more than 200 students, the BSAK Sixth Form achieves this with a curriculum designed to appeal to a wide variety of interests through pathways that include purely A Levels, A Levels plus a BTEC Level 3 Diploma (Business, Engineering or Sport) and a Creative Arts pathway.
The School passionately believes that a truly exceptional education requires much more than the pursuit of academic qualifications. A balanced, holistic and well-rounded education is central to its values and is provided in the guise of Sixth Form Enrichment. This includes a plethora of academic enrichment programmes, mostly led by Sixth Form students, which are part of a wider and extremely diverse co-curricular programme involving Sport, Music, Creative & Performing Arts departments.
The BSAK Future Leader’s Diploma for example aims to equip students with 21st century skills to not only succeed, but also to make their mark in the world.
Students should leave BSAK ready and able to deal with the challenges of today and tomorrow’s world and to make the most of the opportunities
There is a culture of giving and service at the core of The British School Al Khubairat’s purpose, decisions and actions that surround them. Global Citizenship and Service is one pillar of this programme and ensures students understand and are able to play a full role in the world.
UAE citizenship and Global citizenship are two features of this provision. Understanding the values and the culture of the country in which they live and how they can contribute to it is emphasised through the ‘service’ and community aspects of this pillar, in addition to moral and ethical education.
Leadership is another pillar that prepares students with the skills and abilities to be the ‘leaders of tomorrow’. This practical leadership course provides a wide range of opportunities and skill development including responsibility, collaboration and teamwork, self-confidence, problem solving, entrepreneurship, communication and independent learning.
Academic Societies also offer the chance for students to supplement their academic learning – GeogSoc, MedSoc, MUN and the Arabic Society are a few that the school offers – and assisting Sixth Form students to develop their interests and knowledge in preparation for university.
Furthermore, there is plenty to look forward to. The School will soon open a new Science and Innovation Centre, providing state-of-the-art classrooms for STEM subjects. This will not only strengthen this provision, but also enable a complete refurbishment of the Sixth Form study and socialising areas.
BSAK is the 2020-2021 winner of the School’s Compared Top School Awards – Best School in the UAE for Post -16 Education and Best School in the UAE for Fine Art and Creative Studio Work. Steve Oakes is the co-author of the A Level Mindset, The GCSE Mindset and The Student Mindset
