Falconry is a traditional Emirati sport that has been practiced for over 2,000 years, with skills passed down through generations.

This ancient art requires patience and cooperation between the falconer and his bird.

By treating the falcon gently and with empathy, the falconer earns its trust and obedience. Emirati falconers have developed unique breeding and rearing methods over the years, making a falconry experience a journey into a living tradition.

How are falcons captured?

In his book, Falconry as a Sport – Our Arab Heritage, the late UAE founder, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, details the essential techniques of capturing these majestic birds.

One method involves the hunter drilling a hole in the ground, hiding between trees, and using a pigeon as a lure.

The hunter controls the pigeon with a thread tied to its leg and, once the falcon attacks, gently pulls the thread to capture the falcon.

Another method uses a net to catch the falcon after it seizes the pigeon. These traditional techniques showcase the deep connection between the hunter and his falcon.
