The World Premiere of The Gauntlet: Faraway Together is coming to Abu Dhabi

The voices of the capital and emirate take to the stage through dance and music in this unique ensemble.

Join NYUAD Arts Center on 31 March at 8pm for the world premiere of an immersive virtual choral-audio portrait by none other than New York based composer Sxip Shirey and dancer Coco Karol.

The Gauntlet: Faraway Together is performed by the NYUAD Choral Ensemble under the direction of Clare Lesser.

The event will be followed by a live online Q&A with Sxip Shirey, Coco Karol and members of the creative and technical teams who gave life to this project.

Why see this event?

It uniquely portrays words and voices from the Abu Dhabi community.

The piece is created specifically for Abu Dhabi; it distinctly captures the cultural moment of placelessness caused by the global pandemic and deals with reconciling distance and connection at this time, which is exactly what we need, isn’t it?

It’s a brilliant show to watch but to make sure you are wholly immersed in the ensemble, grab your headphones.

Listen to the libretto composed of personal narratives of individuals from Abu Dhabi and the NYUAD community in a 3D audio experience.

So how did this show come together?

You guessed it, it was Zoom to the rescue.

Coco Karol interviewed 20 diverse members of the Abu Dhabi community, using a self-developed, specialised process of “movement interviews.’‘

Drawing from these interview texts, composer Sxip Shirey wrote an original choral score with a libretto drawn from the voices of our community.

The NYUAD Choral Ensemble then recorded their parts individually, which were transformed into an immersive, spatially designed sound installation for audience members to experience through headphones.

This is a one-day concert so make sure you buy your tickets NOW
