Augurs by Chrystèle Khodr revisits the 1980s in Lebanese theatre production
Two of Lebanon’s most celebrated actresses, Hanane Hajj Ali and Randa Asmar, take the stage to retrace their remarkable journeys at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi on 28 and 29 September.
Taking place at The Black Box, Augurs by Chrystèle Khodr delves deep into the essence of true freedom. The production revisits the early 1980s when both women made the pivotal decision to dedicate their lives to the theatre.
As they share their personal and professional memories, Hajj Ali and Asmar reconstruct the fragmented memory of Beirut during a time when the city was divided between east and west.
Through their testimonies, they draw a poignant map of theaters and venues that once were, but have since vanished, evoking a sense of loss and nostalgia.
As the play unfolds, the actresses confront the almost impossible task of reviving a bygone era, while questioning the role of theater during the harrowing decade of war.
They explore how their art form provided a sanctuary and a space for living true freedom, even amidst conflict and chaos.
The play also reflects on how their relationship with their craft has evolved over time, making it a profound exploration of theater as both a personal journey and a reflection of society.
