The Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center recently hosted its second inspiring Science Talk
The Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center welcomes esteemed marine researchers for a talk on shark ecology and conservation with discussions about the future of these iconic marine animals in the region.
The Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center, the largest dedicated marine research, rescue, rehabilitation and return Center in the region, hosted its second inspiring Science Talk.
Held on 26 October, this event followed the official opening of the Centre to the public last month and its first successful science talk about corals, its ecosystem and the future of coral research and conservation in Abu Dhabi.
Attendees enjoyed a rich discussion with leading experts Dr. Julia Spaet and Shamsa Al Hameli talking about shark ecology and efforts to conserve shark populations. They also had the chance to hear about shark studies, currently carried out in Abu Dhabi’s waters and the Arabian Gulf.

The evening began with Dr. Julia Spaet, a seasoned research professional with a PhD in shark ecology and conservation, in which she shared her invaluable expertise on sharks and shark ecology. Next on stage was Shamsa Al Hameli, a Fisheries Assistant Scientist at the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD), who presented an overview of her studies on sharks in Abu Dhabi.
Following the insightful presentations, an engaging Q&A session was held around the future of research and conservation efforts concerning the shark populations in the Arabian Gulf.
The series of monthly science talks featuring insights from local and international experts is scheduled to continue and will cover a wide variety of topics from cuttlefish breeding to geology and climate change.
Drawing on SeaWorld’s extensive legacy in marine life conservation, the Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center brings SeaWorld’s 60 years of experience in marine wildlife rescue operations, marine science research, education and preservation to the UAE and the wider region.
The events are free to attend, but pre-booking is mandatory. Interested participants can reserve their spot by filling out a form on the Center’s website and presenting a confirmation email upon arrival. Doors to this entertaining and informative event will open at 6pm and will run until 7.45pm.
The Center hosts three tours per week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4.30pm to 5.30pm guided by members of the education team and include in-depth explanations of the facilities and capabilities of the Center. To join tours at the Center, pre-booking is essential, with a fee of AED 30 per person.
