Abu Dhabi school are ready to Pile it Up

As part of the EAD’s mission to rid the emirate of single-use plastics, schools have now been challenged to collect and recycle for grand prizes!

As part of their continued efforts to free the capital of single-use plastics, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched a dynamic challenge with schools!

Aptly titled Pile it Up, Abu Dhabi schools are pitted against each other to collect and return single-use plastic water bottles over two months. The winners will be selected based on the highest number of bottles collected, and most importantly recycled.

For the challenge, the EAD will collaborate closely with the Emirates Schools Establishment.

On from 23 September to 22 November, participating schools have some handsome prizes to look forward to! While the winners walk away with a grand prize of AED 12,000, the first and second runners-up will receive AED 10,000 and AED 8,000 respectively!

While there are seven cash prizes up for grabs, all funds need to be allocated towards sustainable environmental projects at school. The top seven schools will be featured on EAD social media channels, and all schools will receive certificates.

Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director of Environment Information, Science Outreach Management Division at EAD, said, “The younger generation today is increasingly eco-conscious and can play an influential role in encouraging their peers and families to get real on efforts to safeguard the environment, which is the core mandate of EAD. We want to harness their concern, show them that we mean business and get their support for our Mission to Zero movement against single-use products.”

The Mission to Zero has been a multi-pronged ambitious campaign working towards reaching a target of zero for single-use plastic, waste, and carbon emissions in the emirate. Coming into effect after the EAD’s Single-Use Plastic Policy in 2020, Abu Dhabi also banned single-use plastic bags among major retailers on 1 June, 2022.
