Veronica
Easily the scariest movie on this list, Veronica is based in 1991 Madrid and involves a bunch of siblings conducting a seance. We won’t spoil what’s to come, but you know it’s going to be scary. And given how several people swear by this movie being the creepiest they’ve ever seen, you know you’re in for a spooky night this Halloween.
Bulbbul
With a witch at the center of the proceedings, the movie takes you through both psychological and jump scare horror in equal parts. Taking place in the olden days of West Bengal in India, this movie is a true horror story and definitely a cut above the rest. If you’re looking to explore horror in Bollywood, this is it!
A Quiet Place
We don’t need to say much about this blockbuster, do we? Aliens sensitive to sounds have taken over the planet. All Emily Blunt and John Krasinski need to do is protect their family and have a child – all without making a sound. You’ll be on the edge of your seat!
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Is it even a scary movie marathon without watching this one? Another classic, the sequel to the 1974 horror cult classic has a stellar team behind it too. Need we say more?
Split
Another psychological thriller, this one has enough jump scares and creepy narratives to keep you hooked till the end. James McAvoy is at his finest form here, and this movie is definitely one of M. Night Shyamalan’s best.
1408
Based on Stephen King’s popular novel, 1408 is a psychological thriller starring John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson. Investigating the hauntings in the room of a particular hotel, it’s a riveting film that’s a must watch this Halloween.
1922
Another one based on Stephen King’s novella, 1922 involves a family and how a murder swiftly changes the course of their lives. With Thomas Jane’s performance compared to Jack Nicholson’s in The Shining, it’s definitely one you want to check out for a spooktacular time this season.
The Ritual
What starts as four friends taking a hiking trip into a Swedish forest quickly becomes a nightmare in this 2017 movie. The British horror movie garnered favourable reviews upon release, making it a kind of hidden gem to check out this Halloween.
TV SHOWS
The Haunting of Hill House
It wouldn’t really be a scary movie list for Halloween without adding The Haunting of Hill House. While technically a show, the Netflix series is spine-chilling in every sense of the term, with a slowly unwinding narrative that will leave you both in tears and shivers. A massive winner on the Halloween scare list!
The Haunting of Bly Manor
A sequel to the above, this series packs an eerie punch as well. With a completely new setting and storyline, the series is sure to whet your appetite for a Halloween scare, while also supplying some drama.
Midnight Mass
If you haven’t seen this already, you definitely should add to your Must Watch list! Midnight Mass skillfully (and extremely scarily) explores what happens to a small village with the arrival of a young Reverend. It’ll leave you shaken in more ways than one.
