Travelling via public buses in Abu Dhabi? The new rule means you will only pay a maximum of AED 5 under certain conditions
If the green and white Hafilat cards aren’t in your wallet, it’s time to make them your best friend!
Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre has announced unified fare structures for all public buses in the emirate.
The basic bus fare for both the city and suburban areas will now be AED 2, plus 5 fils per kilometre — with the cost capped at AED 5.
This means that passengers no longer have to pay the base fare of AED 2 multiple times in case of taking more than one bus to reach their final destination, location notwithstanding.
However, this only works under certain conditions, namely –
- The passenger must change the bus within a reasonable period of time (yet to be determined)
- The number of changes must not exceed two times, which means the trip must be completed using a maximum of three buses
- There should be no change to the opposite direction of the itinerary
That being said, it increased accessibility and feasibility for most passengers travelling across the UAE capital, from the suburbs and back. So if you aren’t taking the public buses in Abu Dhabi already, there’s more than a sustainable reason to do so!
