Abu Dhabi Airports is revolutionising the travel experience with the launch of the Biometric Smart Travel project.
Just recently, SpaceX and Tesla owner Elon Musk said that the US needed to ‘catch up’ to Abu Dhabi in relation to advanced technology in airports.
Imagine zipping through airport security without needing a passport or boarding pass – that’s the new reality for travelers at Zayed International Airport!
What’s new?
The project, set to be rolled out in three phases, integrates cutting-edge biometric authentication systems at every security and operations touchpoint.
From automated traveler registration and self-service baggage delivery to facial recognition at e-gates and boarding gates, you’ll glide through the airport with ease.
No more prior registration
Thanks to the databases of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security, there’s no need for prior registration for departing passengers.
The system automatically authenticates travelers, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

Already in action
This innovative project kicked off in November 2023 with the new terminal at Zayed International Airport. Etihad Airways and Abu Dhabi Airports have implemented these biometric systems at multiple touchpoints, eliminating the need for direct interaction with airport staff.
Expanding Horizons
Phase two has just begun! Biometric systems are being introduced for five more airlines at check-in and boarding gates.
New e-gates in designated transit areas will also register travelers’ biometric data and facilitate facial recognition.
Soon, you’ll even see these systems in the Etihad Airways lounge and duty-free retail outlets.
