If you’ve driven over the Sheikh Zayed Bridge recently you’ve no doubt spotted the magnificent Louvre Abu Dhabi.
The giant dome shaped building will become home to 600 artworks, of which 300 will be loans from the French partner museums when it opens its doors in early 2017.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi told Yalla recently the museum will enter its final and important preparation phase in these next few months – exciting news!
So what can we look forward to?
Once open the museum, situated on Saadiyat Island, will provide an incredible space for visitors of all ages to explore one of the world’s finest art displays, as well as a place to discover, exchange and learn.
In addition to the wide collection of artworks there will also be a visiting exhibition space and a Children’s Museum, especially laid out for younger visitors, providing interactive exhibitions with real artworks specifically curated for children to enjoy.
All about the dome
The 180 metre-wide dome, which creates an illusion of being afloat on the sea, covers the majority of the museum and will becomes an iconic structure for the city.
The magnificent eight-layered dome is made up of four outer stainless steel layers and four inner layers separated by a steel structure five metres in height. The structure is made up of 85 super-sized elements, weighing around 50 tonnes.
Jean Nouvel, the architect behind the museum’s design, sought inspiration for the concept of Louvre Abu Dhabi in traditional Arabic architectural culture. Around 55 individual buildings will make up the ‘museum city’ in the sea.
