GEMS Education has unveiled a bold new zero-tolerance policy on vaping.
As part of the initiative, schools will install high-tech vaping detection sensors, conduct random bag checks, and roll out a student-focused education campaign to tackle the rising trend.
Recognising vaping as a growing global health issue, GEMS Education is taking significant action to combat its rising prevalence among young people. The focus is not just on enforcement but on re-educating students about the dangers of vaping and nicotine addiction, equipping them with the knowledge to make healthier choices.
The move makes GEMS the first major education group in the UAE to introduce such comprehensive anti-vaping measures. The new sensors—set to be installed across campuses, including the soon-to-open GEMS School of Research and Innovation in August—will immediately alert staff if vaping is detected, helping schools take swift action.

Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at GEMS, describes vaping as “one of the most pressing health threats facing young people today.” The initiative, she says, is not just about enforcing rules but educating students on the risks of nicotine addiction and supporting those who need help quitting.
With awareness campaigns, positive curriculum integration, and parental involvement, schools are taking significant steps to create a safe and healthy environment for students—one breath at a time.
