This groundbreaking symposium at Louvre Abu Dhabi explores the future of African museums

Louvre Abu Dhabi is set to host a pioneering symposium titled ‘African Museums Today and Tomorrow’, a three-day event from 28-30 January.

This event is dedicated to examining the evolving roles of African museums in contemporary society.

This landmark gathering will convene prominent voices from the global museum landscape to discuss the transformative power of museums and their contributions to cultural dialogues worldwide.

Taking place just before the highly anticipated Kings and Queens of Africa: Forms and Figures of Power exhibition – Louvre Abu Dhabi’s first major showcase of African heritage – the symposium promises to be an unparalleled platform for insightful discussions and innovative ideas.

The programme will explore three central themes, each day dedicated to a different aspect of the evolving museum landscape:

Focused on the power of inclusive storytelling and strategies to engage younger generations, this session underscores how museums can resonate more deeply with diverse audiences.

Day 2: How museums impact surrounding communities? (2 pm)

This session delves into responsible collection management and fostering localized research initiatives, emphasizing the role of museums in community enrichment.

Day 3: How African museums relate to global issues? (10 am)

A spotlight on contemporary African art practices, the importance of international collaborations, and the global relevance of African museums.

Fostering a new vision for museums

‘African Museums Today and Tomorrow’ underscores Louvre Abu Dhabi’s commitment to fostering cultural connections and addressing critical questions about the role of museums in an interconnected world.

Produced in collaboration with France Muséums, the symposium seeks to challenge traditional approaches and propose innovative strategies to enhance museums’ societal relevance.
