Dive into the Union Wrestling Cup highlights for Day One at Mubadala Arena Abu Dhabi

The Union Wrestling Cup hit Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Arena with a bang yesterday, 24 January!

Under the watchful eye of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the inaugural event, organised by the UAE Wrestling Federation, unfolded on 24 January.

The arena was buzzing with energy, showcasing Motaraha, an Emirati traditional wrestling, and the ever-thrilling freestyle wrestling.

Distinguished guests, including Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and UFC Champions Islam Makhachev and Khamzat Chimaev, added star power to the grand opening.

As the crowd roared, winners were honoured by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan during the podium ceremony, creating a memorable spectacle.

The medal race was intense, with Fujairah Martial Arts Club clinching the top spot. Sharjah Self Defence secured second place, while Khorfakkan Club took home the bronze.

The tournament saw 272 athletes from six clubs battling it out, with Motaraha competitions drawing significant attention.

Talal Al Hashemi from the UAE Wrestling Federation expressed delight at the diverse participation, emphasising Motaraha’s strong connection to Emirati heritage.

He revealed plans for more exciting tournaments, building on the success of the Union Wrestling Cup.

Ali Muhammad Al-Najjar, a standout in the 83 kg category, shared his journey to victory. Grateful for the support from Sharjah Self Defence Club, he conquered the challenges with determination.

Meanwhile, Motaraha bouts showcased thrilling performances, with Ibrahim Rashid Suleiman Al Shamsi and Hazza Jaafar Abdulaziz Al-Jallaf dominating their respective categories.

The Union Wrestling Cup not only celebrated athleticism but also highlighted the rich cultural tapestry of Emirati heritage. Brace yourself for more gripping tournaments as the UAE Wrestling Federation continues to make waves in the world of wrestling!
