From rider safety to parking issues, the pilot project hopes to alleviate a lot of issues

The summer heat is too glaring to avoid, especially more so for delivery riders. Fortunately, the UAE capital has acknowledged the same, implementing a number of initiatives to make their lives easier.

From new road safety rules to sustainable rest stops, there’s plenty being put into effect.

And now, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced the introduction of the Delivery Riders Hub pilot project, to be implemented in Abu Dhabi in September 2023.

Developed in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Government entities, the private sector and non-profit organisations, the initiative hopes to make the emirate a better place to live and work in.

This will create a suitable work environment for delivery motorcycle riders by allocating safe spaces with shaded waiting areas, comfortable seating equipped with air conditioning and drinking water facilities.

These provisions will go a long way to enhance their working conditions, especially during the summer months.

The initiative came following a number of interviews conducted with delivery drivers to understand the main issues and challenges they face during work. The project will be implemented on E25 street because it is one of the hotspots for restaurants and cafes.

The new hubs, which were designed to be easily produced and assembled, can accommodate 10 to 15 individuals at once.

It ensures the safety of the drivers by providing parking spaces for their motorcycles and resolves the issue of the vehicles occupying pedestrian paths, thus preventing them from being issued with traffic fines.

Additionally, it addresses the problem of delays in food delivery, while the hubs can be used to generate revenue by using them as advertising and promotional locations.
