Don’t miss the Da Vinci Glow moon this Friday

Named after the artist, the beautiful visual will grace the skies for a brief period post-sunset this weekend

Who doesn’t love a beautiful night under the moonlit sky? And on 19 May, the sky is going to be taking on a Da Vinci Glow!

The phenomenon is named after Renaissance polymath Leonardo da Vinci, who discovered Earthshine.

For the uninitiated, Earthshine is visible when a Crescent Moon is on the horizon at sunset. What’s visible between the crescent horns is a ghostly image of a Full Moon too!

It’s only possible to see Da Vinci glow when a slim crescent moon is visible close to the horizon during both the last few days and the first few days of the moon’s orbit of Earth, which happens this week.

Fortunately, this spectacular sighting doesn’t need you to beg, borrow, or steal some fancy binoculars or a telescope, it will be plenty visible to the naked eye.

Set your alarms for around 6.45pm, and don’t miss this rare sighting!
