UAE’s ‘Today for Tomorrow: National Day Mangrove Project’ will kick off at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Beach
Eco-warriors of Abu Dhabi, time to roll up your sleeves and make a real impact on the environment.
A new initiative called “Today for Tomorrow: National Day Mangrove Project” aims to fulfil the UAE’s pledge at COP 27 to plant a whopping 100 million mangroves by 2030, and it starts with the planting of 10,000 mangrove trees featured in the 51st National Day celebrations across the seven emirates.
Everyone who calls the UAE home is invited to take part in the collective effort, which kicks off on 11 May at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Beach, from 10 am.
Mangroves are a vital part of the UAE’s coastal ecosystem, acting as the “green lung” of the land. Covering over 150 square kilometres of the UAE coast, these unique trees capture carbon dioxide, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change. Plus, they’re a bountiful source of food and habitat for countless species.
Spearheaded by the Organising Committee of the 51st National Day Celebrations, the initiative is in line with the pronouncement of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, making 2023 as the ‘Year of Sustainability’.
