Night 352 of One Thousand and One Nights tells the story of the blond slave princess Zumurrud, specially rewritten for this magical project.
Who doesn’t know and love the ancient Arabian sagas from the famous stories of One Thousand and One Nights? Tales that still appeal to the imagination today, these Middle-Eastern folk stories comprise all possible literary genres.
One of these stories, specially the one from Night 352, is all set to come to life in the most passionate manner at the Cultural Foundation.
The tale about the white slave princess Zumurrud was rewritten for this project by Hazim Kamaledin (Longlist International Arabic Booker Prize 2015) as a modern fairy tale about contemporary slavery, but also about the passion for music and how it can expand someone’s horizons.
Now reworked into a modern parable especially for Osama Abulrasol, the Iraqi composer and qanun player was inspired to write new compositions immediately. For Night 352, he joins forces with Brussels Jazz Orchestra.
Along with Osama Abdulrasol (qanun & compositions), and Jahida Wehbe (vocals & improvisation), Brussels Jazz Orchestra immerses itself in the legend of Night 352, and brings the story and the Middle-Eastern atmosphere of the 1001 nights back to life through poems from Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, Shakespeare, Muzaffar al-Nawab, Al-Mutanabbi and fragments of songs that dwell in memory.
